Otto Sherman

Otto David Sherman è nato a Brownsville, Brooklyn, in U.S.A. nel 1936. Sognava di essere un graphic designer da quando aveva 13 anni. I suoi genitori hanno sostenuto il suo sogno e il famoso logo grafico e iconico Paul Rand è diventato mentore del ragazzo. Dal 1950 al 1954 ha frequentato il corso speciale per il Diploma di Musica e Arte. Nel 1975 ha scoperto vecchie immagini di metallo cromato, che ha usato per la produzione di timbri in gomma e, quindi, è diventato un artista di posta. Il passo successivo è stato quello di incorporare e modificare francobolli reali per cui divenne ben presto conosciuto per le sue “confessioni di nazioni”. Era naturale infatti che avrebbe dovuto rivelare che medaglie e monete non erano altro che dichiarazioni ed onori falsi delle nazioni e non certo le loro gesta eroiche, i loro trionfi e non importa per quale atrocità o ipocrisia le abbiano perpetrato. Tutte le nazioni celebrano i loro leader efferati, così il suo compito è stato quello di rendere evidente e naturale che tutti i governanti che hanno avuto potere sono stati in realtà dei disonesti. Sherman ora vive a New York City.

Otto David Sherman was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, in 1936. He dreamed of being a graphic designer since he was 13. His parents supported his dream and the world famous graphic and iconic logo designer Paul Rand became the teenager‘s mentor. From 1950 to 1954 he went to a special High School for Music and Art. In 1975 he discovered old metal plated images, that he used to produce rubber stamps and hence became a mail artist. The next step was to incorporate actual postage stamps which became his “confessions of nations”. It was only natural that he should discover that medals and coins were statements of nations as well – usually their heroics, their triumphs no matter what atrocity or hypocrisy they might perpetrate. All nations celebrate heinous leaders, so he made it his task to make it obvious that all rogue rulers must rule. Sherman now lives in New York City.
